NTANDO CELE
is a director and theatre-maker from South Africa, currently based in Bern. She holds a National Diploma in Theatre Studies from Durban University of Technology (1999-2001) and a Master of Theatre from Dasarts-Amsterdam (2009-2012). She has created and performed highly political shows and as part of Manaka Empowerment Prod. has staged numerous political-musical comedies since 2012. Ntando Cele's creations are uniquely South African while being in tune with global trends. Her plays have toured worldwide including Face-Off 2013 in Holland, South Africa, and Switzerland. Black Off at Schaubühne Berlin, MITsp in São Paulo, Beursschouwburg in Brussels, Bühnen Graz, Festival Contemporary Art in Prague and Brixton House London. She delightfully dissects prejudices and stereotypes and confronts audiences with their perceptions. In 2019-20 she was co-writer, co-director and performer of Black. Space. Race. A Supersonic Afrobeat performance. In 2020/21 Go Go Othello toured in Bern, Lausanne and Marseille. Spafrica, a co-creation with Studio Hetzel, premiered at the Theater Vidy Lausanne, Yes, Yes, Yes! A co-creation with Corinne Maier premiered in Kaserne Basel, in 2023 and both are currently on a European tour. As a constantly evolving artist, she works as a director, dramaturg and workshop leader on various projects to influence mainstream cultural practice. In 2023 she won the Swiss Diversity Award for Wer hat Angst vorm weissen Mann? & 2023 Schweizer Preis für Darstellende Künste.
